Here’s the next installment in our side hustle case study series, where real people share how they make extra money in their spare time!
This week my friend Morgan is telling us all about how she makes money online with matched betting. I am a big fan of matched betting too and Morgan is smashing it, so I really enjoyed hearing her story!
How to make money from matched betting with Morgan
Please tell us a little about yourself and your side hustle.
I’m Morgan and I blog at morganmwoods.com. I started matched betting back in 2016 and it’s been a nice big boost to my monthly income ever since.
How long have you been doing your side hustle? How did you get into it?
I’ve been matched betting since November 2016 when my family and I had just moved house. It was almost Christmas, we were in debt and we had no money to buy the kids any Christmas presents. I found out about matched betting, took a chance and it turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever done!
What does the work actually involve? What does a typical day/work session look like for you?
Matched betting is basically where you take advantage of the free bets offered by the bookmakers. It can sound a bit complicated at first but when you start placing your first few bets it becomes clearer.
I usually spend around 2-3 hours each week going through the offers and placing my bets. The weekends tend to be the best days as well as big events such as Cheltenham or the World Cup.
How much can you make doing matched betting?
I last calculated back in August 2018 that I had made over £10,000 since getting started with matched betting. I would have a guess that it looks more like £15,000 now. I tend to make around £500-£750 each month which isn’t bad for the time I put in.
Are there any start-up costs and/or ongoing expenses with this side hustle?
You do need at least £60 to get started with matched betting for your initial bets. And a membership to a matched betting website such as Profit Accumulator (now known as Outplayed.com) is very useful too. Although your profits do add up fairly quickly once you’ve got started.
- Make up to £40 with a free trial
- Potential earnings of £500+ per month
- Personally tried and tested
- 150,000+ members
- 4.7 Trustpilot rating
What advice would you give to somebody who wants to get started?
Take your time with your first few bets but try not to overthink it too much. It will feel tricky and confusing at first but using a matched betting tool will really help.
Any recommended websites or resources?
I would really recommend signing up to a website like Outplayed.com for one of their free trials. Matched betting can be really confusing but their step by step videos really help you get started.
I also have a matched betting guide on my website – https://morganmwoods.com/matched-betting/matched-betting-guide/

Hi my husband really wants to do this match betting thing as it looks really interesting and intriguing. But at the moment he’s a little bit afraid of doing something wrong. With doing the match betting. And I’ve told him to just try but I don’t really know what to tell him as he keeps saying that there’s a lot of things to do and remember. And if you don’t do it right that then you won’t make money in fact he says we’ll lose money if he doesn’t do it right and read it properly the information and instructions of how to do it properly. But I feel that he’s to over cautious and and to afraid to do it. So I don’t really know really what to tell him to do with it or about it. Apart from get on with it come get over yourself and get a grip/and a hold of yourself. Thank you take care bye
Thanks for reading! I felt the same in the beginning. It is very nerve wracking, especially if you don’t have any experience with betting. I found it quite hard to get my head round just reading about it, but it made a lot more sense when I actually did the first bet and could see how it all worked in action!
I definitely recommend using a matched betting training service that has video walkthroughs (I used Profit Accumulator). Watch the video through once or twice in preparation, then watch it again, pause the video at every step and just copy them step by step as you place your first bet. That way you don’t have to remember everything – just follow the video. After 3 or 4 bets I didn’t need to watch the videos any more.
My other tip is choose games that take place a few hours or few days in the future, just because the closer you get to the start time, the more chance there is that the odds can change, and that’s when it gets confusing! If you choose a game the next day or so you can relax more.
It works every time if you follow the instructions. The only real risk is human error so it’s important to feel comfortable and don’t rush. Good luck!
