What are digital products?
Digital products are things you can sell and deliver online, without needing to worry about physical stock. They’re intangible, which means they only exist digitally—think of files, software, or Canva templates.
Some popular examples include ebooks, downloadable templates, stock photos, printable journals and planners, and even software or online courses.
‘Printables‘ are a very popular type of digital product to sell. Printables are any product that your customer can print out at home (or at a print shop). Think printable planners, worksheets, colouring pages, invitations and wall art.
Learn how to design beautiful printable/downloadable products to sell on Etsy. This is a low cost business model with huge potential for passive income!
The big advantage of digital products is how easy they are to sell! No shipping, no storage, and no running out of stock.
It’s all about creating once, and selling forever!
Why sell digital products?
Selling digital products comes with some big benefits.
First off, the startup costs are super low. You don’t need to worry about manufacturing, shipping, or renting a warehouse to store inventory. All you need is the right software or tools to create your product, and you’re good to go.
The profit margins can also be high. Once you’ve created a digital product, you can sell it again and again without any extra cost. No need to restock or pay for materials.
You don’t even need to do any more work, other than perhaps answer the occasional customer service query.
Another huge perk is global reach. You can sell to anyone, anywhere in the world. There are no geographical limits, making it easier to scale your business.
Finally, digital products offer passive income potential. You can create something once, like a printable worksheet, ebook or an online course, and keep earning from it long after the work is done.
It’s a great way to make money while you sleep!
Given all these benefits, I think selling digital products is one of the best and most accessible ways to make money online.
You can spend as much or as little time as you want on your online product business. So whether you’re looking for a flexible side hustle idea or you want to grow a full time online business, digital products are definitely worth looking into.

Where to sell your digital products
Ready to get your digital products out into the world? There are plenty of platforms to choose from, each catering to different types of digital products and audiences.
Here’s a rundown of where you can sell your creations.
Etsy
Etsy is my top choice for selling digital products!
Etsy is renowned for its vibrant marketplace dedicated to handmade, vintage, and unique digital items. It’s a go-to platform for buyers seeking distinctive printables, from planners and wall art to party decorations and organisational tools.
You can sell almost anything on Etsy, but it works especially well for things like printables, clipart, design templates, craft-related items, and art prints.
The biggest benefit of Etsy is its built-in audience—millions of users visit Etsy every day specifically looking for creative and personalised products.
Of course, there is also a lot of competition on Etsy. But with quality products and some knowledge of how to optimise your listings, you have potential to reach a gigantic audience.
Plus, Etsy’s user-friendly interface, sellers’ app and marketing tools make it easy to set up your shop and manage your listings.
They have in-built systems to deliver your files to the customer, request reviews, set up discount codes, and so on.
Marketplaces for digital products
If you are selling design assets such as graphics, fonts, stock images, and templates, there are several other specialised marketplaces to look into.
Some of these are:
- Creative Market
- CreativeFabrica
- Envato Market
- Gumroad
- Design Cuts
Like Etsy, they have their own committed user base so they are great for reaching a large audience.
Sell on your own website
Want full control over your sales? Consider setting up your own website.
Platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce (for WordPress), Squarespace, and Wix make it easy to create an online store for digital products.
This way, you keep all the profits and manage your brand exactly how you want.
Selling on your own website is the natural choice if you already have a blog, a business or your own audience to sell to.
However, if you don’t already have an audience, you will need to think about how you will get traffic to your website! This could mean paid ads, social media promotion, or partnering with influencers.
It can take a lot of extra time and money to drive money to a new website. That’s why, if you don’t already have a platform, I recommend Etsy for their built-in traffic.
Platforms for selling courses
If you’re looking to sell online courses, there are specialised platforms for that. Teachable, Thinkific, and Kajabi offer tools to create and sell courses. Udemy and Podia are also popular for reaching learners who are searching for new knowledge and skills.
Stock and creative asset marketplaces
For those in the creative field, stock and asset marketplaces are a great fit. Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, iStock, Pond5, and ArtStation are excellent platforms to sell stock photos, videos, and other creative assets. These sites attract buyers looking for high-quality visual and audio content.

How to create digital products
Creating digital products can be a fun and rewarding process.
To start, brainstorm ideas that align with your interests and expertise. Validate your ideas by researching the market, checking out competitors, and getting feedback from potential customers.
Tools and resources
When it comes to crafting your digital products, there are plenty of tools to help you bring your ideas to life.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of Canva! It’s an online design software that is great for designing eye-catching graphics and printables. They have loads of templates, fonts and graphics to get you started. You can start with the free version, or pay a small monthly fee to open up a whole new range of assest.
There are also professional programs like Adobe Photoshop/Creative Cloud for more advanced design needs.
Basically, you don’t need any special equipment to create digital products. Just a laptop, an internet connection and some free software is all it takes to get started.
You don’t even really need any design skills! Lots of digital products are very simple. Minimalism is in!
However, there are a few things you will need to keep in mind, such as print quality and file size.
For full guidance, I highly recommend the E-Printables Side Hustle course from Gold City Ventures. It teaches you literally everything you need to know to sell printables on Etsy, from designing your product to opening an Etsy shop to marketing.
I am a member of this course and I’m so impressed at how detailed it is and how often they update it!

Outsourcing digital product creation
If you’re not confident in your design skills, or if you simply don’t have the time, outsourcing is a smart option.
Platforms like Fiverr and Upwork connect you with freelancers who can handle everything from graphic design and writing to software development. This allows you to focus on your business while experts take care of the creation process.
Conclusion
Selling digital products is a great way to combine creativity with making money. With low costs, high profits, and the chance to earn passive income, it’s easy to see why so many people are getting into it as a side hustle or second income!
Platforms like Etsy are perfect, especially if you’re selling printables, because they’ve already got a big audience ready to buy.
With the right tools, it’s easy to turn your ideas into reality. Just make sure to check if there’s a market for your idea, pick the best platform, and don’t be afraid to get help if you need it.
